A Star Spangled start to the second LYC flotilla of 2025!

By: Cristina Hubbell

Two exuberant crews set out from Liberty Landing and Great Kills for a weekend of fun in the Long Island Sound. Winds were light and weather was perfect for a cruise up the East River.

Midday entrance to the East River provided stunning views of the city and the excitement surrounding the Fourth of July celebrations. SV Sea Gazer II (members: Ed Guy & Cristina Hubbell) and SV Xarifa (members: Rosetta & Sal Palmeri with crew Kathrin Henkel and Lahar Pasad and gust Yara) arrived in Oyster Bay in time for cocktails and aperitivo before heading into town for dinner at Wild Honey. After a delicious dinner including refreshing cocktails and salads, local oysters, clams and various seafood, the group headed back to Xarifa for a nightcap, fireworks and birthday celebrations.

Saturday brought fair skies and a light breeze. Brunch on Xarifa with fresh fruit, an assortment of cheeses, eggs, biscuits and of course Rosetta’s famous coffee. There was time for a swim before heading to Rye ,NY.

The winds were light in the afternoon, by the time we neared American Yacht Club the breeze picked up. Crew on Xarifa raised her sails and had a spirited sail before heading to the Yacht club for dinner. The club was beautiful, and another delicious dinner was had by all before returning to Xarifa for a nightcap and recap of the day's events.A lazy Sunday morning at American Yacht Club was followed by a trip to Lobster House at City Island for a delicious lunch. Sunday evening Sea Gazer headed home to Liberty landing while Xarifa spent the night at City Island Yacht Club opting to head back in the morning.

The drink of the weekend was The Hugo Spritz. Here is how to mix a Hugo Spritz, a lower-alcohol sparkling cocktail that's refreshing to drink, easy on the palate, and simpleIngredients:

  • 1/2-ounce St-Germain

  • 1 sprig mint

  • 4 ounces prosecco, chilled

  • 1 ounce soda water, chilled

  • Garnish a mint spring and lemon or lime.

Come out and join the next flotilla, a great opportunity to connect with members, spend time with friends and explore not so distant shores!
